Q – I have an underactive thyroid which causes me no problems and is well managed with thyroxine. I suffer from only one symptom of the illness and its treatment – a slight magnesium deficiency. Sometimes at night I get ‘restless’ legs or muscle spasms. I treat this immediately with a little liquid magnesium taken orally in water and the spasms stop. If I exercise excessively, or if I eat food containing lots of calcium (yoghurt, cheese, figs etc.) then the problem worsens. I don’t know whether to take magnesium every day or how much I should take when the problem occurs. Dallas, Auckland
