Anyone on a low carb fat diet who is consuming products labelled ‘sugar free’, ‘diet’ or ‘low carb’ is also at risk as the dangers of artificial sweeteners add to the risk of aging.
In an article published in the New Scientist, researchers from the University of Oxford and the open University reported that taking sugary snacks between meals might damage vital organ proteins and cause premature aging.
Their experiments suggest that high levels of sugars in the blood cause proteins to stick together. Normally, special enzymes ‘unstick’ the glycated proteins, but the sugar levels are raised between meals the enzymes cannot cope and the proteins become permanently damaged causing many health risks.
