Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder characterised by the growth of numerous cysts, predominantly in the kidneys, but also occurring in other organs such as the liver and pancreas.
Q: I was diagnosed some time ago as having polycystic kidneys. I haven’t as yet had any major symptoms, but at times I do get a mild ‘ache’ around the kidney area. I would like to find whether there is anything I can do to ease the symptoms and if so, hopefully, try and slow down the progress of this disease. I understand that there is no known cure and that I am likely to end up with needing a kidney transplant. This does not sound to me like it is a nice option, so I would like to avoid it as long as possible.
