Under the Alexander technique, one learns that within the visual system resides an entire map of the human body in all its parts, and that the eyes themselves link to corresponding structures in the brain. Thus the visual system contains links to our immune nervous system - the reptilian brain, our emotions -the limbic system and our ability to think and reason, also known as the neocortex.
Contrary to popular belief, it is not the eyes that see but rather the brain. Any eye or visual dysfunction is the result of improper function of the visual brain and so need to be addressed as such. The information that comes through the eyes travels though the visual system network and has a vital role in stimulating pathways of the brain associated with the function of the body. The limbic system which is the emotional brain and the neocortex which is the thinking part of the brain in addition to the eye and optic nerve itself. Relearning to be able to see better happens much more on the inside, than just the eyes themselves.
