Herbs At School
Our school, Pukehou School is now an environmental school. It all started when the students in Room1 in Napier began a unit study on herbs in 2004. We started the study because of the National Herb Week. In the process we studied basil for cooking, thyme for decorating and calendula for its healing properties.

Our school, Pukehou School is now an environmental school. It all started when the students in Room1 in Napier began a unit study on herbs in 2004. We started the study because of the National Herb Week. In the process we studied basil for cooking, thyme for decorating and calendula for its healing properties. We were going to study yarrow, but that failed when all of the plants we received died after we had planted them. It turns out we set the salt level in the seaweed was too high for the yarrow. We ordered 30 basil and thyme plants, but were sent 30 packets of each, with about six in each! We potted the thyme plants for later use. We planted the basil in the organic garden, window box and hydroponic area, but we still have a lot to learn about Hydroponics.
