Sugar makes life sweeter, but artificial sweeteners have their downside, such as weight gain, diabetes, cancer links and cavity issues. Since this article was published in 2005, the food manufacturing companies have been placed under pressure to reduce the sugar content in their food products. Manufactures also responded to the European Commission call to reduce, or remove existing sugar levels in food products, however the food company response has been to research and use artificial sweeteners instead.

Manufactures also responded to the European Commission call to reduce, or remove existing sugar levels in food products, however the food company response has been to research and use artificial sweeteners instead.

They include monosaccharides and disaccharides, plus EU approved sweeteners, which were never approved prior to 1997. These sweeteners must be listed on food labels. A 2016 study on carcinogenic potential of items like sucralose (E955) has been published, so sugar substitutes have gone sour.
