Aloe vera has captured the attention of great minds and has a long history as a healing plant in nearly every culture, continent and for all age groups. Recent research is proving what many people knew throughout history, including Alexander the Great, Cleopatra and Marco Polo, who all utilised this plant centuries ago. Alexander the Great conquered the island of Socotra to have the aloe for his army, and used the plant to heal his soldiers’ wounds. Cleopatra used it as a skin product, while Marco Polo recorded descriptions of the many applications of the aloe vera plant during his fabled travels in the Orient.
Aloe, derived from the Arabic word alloeh, means ‘shining, bitter substance’ and was buried together with pharaohs in Ancient Egypt, because it was regarded as the plant of immortality.
